Who's Going To Be Making It Big In The Next 12 Months?
Dropout Drafts 2013
Our shortlist of 10 acts we think will continue to build on the momentum they have created in 2012, and have a standout 2013.
AlunaGeorge are an electronic duo from London, made up of Aluna Francis on vocals and George Reid on production. The duo first met in June 2009 and released their first commercial single ‘Your Drums, Your Love’ in September 2012. George used to be a guitarist in an indie rock group and cites The Neptunes and Lil’ Wayne as his inspirations.
A$AP Rocky was named after hip-hop legend Rakim, so it is no surprise that he is carving his way as one of the best new rappers in the last few years. Rakim Mayers was born and raised in Harlem, New York and took his stage name from hip-hop collective A$AP Mob. He has already worked with huge stars such as Lil’ Wayne, Drake and Rihanna and is set to release his debut album ‘LongLiveA$AP’ in 2013.
Haim are a band from L.A. made up of sisters Este, Danielle and Alana Haim, who describe themselves as “nu-folk–meets–nineties-R&B”. The girls are set to support Florence + the Machine on their UK tour this month and they have also previously worked with artists such as Mumford & Sons and Ke$ha in the past. Their debut album is expected to be released in early 2013.
South London born Arlissa burst onto the music scene in a spectacular way, with her debut single featuring the one and only Nas. She’s been compared to singers Jessie Ware and Florence + the Machine and cites Kate Bush as her biggest inspiration but she also has an R&B twist. The music business is already in love with her and we have no doubt everyone else will this time next year.
Tom Odell will be kicking off 2013 in a big way, as he’s just been announced as the first male winner of the BRITs Critics’ Choice Award. The 22 year-old singer/songwriter has been interested in music since an early age and signed his record deal with Columbia after only four gigs. Having already built up a large fanbase, Tom’s star can only to continue to rise.
BRITs Critics' Choice Award nominee Laura Mvula has come a long way in the last year, as this time in 2011 the singer was working at the reception desk for the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. Since then, she has been nominated for the BBC Sound of 2013 as well as the BRIT Award. Laura is a classically trained singer/songwriter from Birmingham, who has been playing the piano since eight and a violin since 10. Her EP, ‘She’, has been raved about by critics and fans alike.
This man needs no introduction, as he is already taking the music industry by storm with his elusive, dreamy sound. Having released his three mixtapes as one album at the end of 2012, The Weeknd, real name, Abel Tesfaye, is one of the fastest rising stars this year. The Weeknd is embarking on a sell-out UK tour at the start of 2013 and we’re sure this won’t be the last we see of the singer - especially with fellow Canadian Drake taking on the role of mentor!
Daley is a singer/songwriter from Manchester who has record contracts in both the the UK and the US. Having been nominated for BBC’s Sound Of 2011, Daley has had a highly successful year - including his recent collaboration with Jessie J, ‘Remember Me’. He supported people such as Emeli Sande, Maverick Sabre and Jessie J on their tours, as well as selling out KOKO London himself.
Angel Haze is a female rapper from Brooklyn. She signed to Universal in August 2012, mere weeks after the release of her mixtape ‘Reservation’. She’s already sparked conversations with her distaste at being compared to other female rappers and her harrowing account of abuse in track ‘Cleaning Out My Closet’. There is nothing shy and retiring about Angel Haze - ferocious through and through.
Brothers Guy and Howard Lawrence make up garage-house duo Disclosure. Having supported SBTRKT and Hot Chip on their recent tours, the pair stormed the UK charts with their hit ‘Latch’. The track reached number 11 on the official UK Top 40. Their debut studio album is due for release is March 2013.
