LIVE: Maverick Sabre @ Shepherd's Bush Empire
The Man Who Can Do It All
Maverick Sabre may have pushed back the October release date for his second studio album Innerstanding to 2015, but that didn’t stop the audience going wild for him when he took the stage at Sheperds Bush Empire on October 28.
The singer/ rapper, real name Michael Stafford, was born in Stoke Newington before moving to Ireland at a young age, so the gig was somewhat of a homecoming.
Maverick moved effortlessly between genres and styles throughout the performance. From reggae to rap right through to soul and R&B, we got a bit of everything, including a cover of Marvin Gaye’s 'What’s Going On'. The contrast between the hard-hitting rap and classic soul voice make it hard to believe they’re coming the one artist, but Sabre does it all.
Despite the setbacks in Innerstanding’s release, Maverick still treated the audience to new material from the LP. Walk into the Sun and Breathe were particular highlights, the former a rousing, Motown-style number and the latter a more haunting affair. He also made sure to perform his hugely successful single I Need during the encore, much to the audience’s delight.
This performance made it clear that the UK is desperate for the next installment in Maverick Sabre’s already-impressive career. Since his 2012 album Lonely are the Brave the 24-year-old has been working with the likes of Idris Elba, Chase & Status and more, so we’re sure fans won’t be disappointed when the time rolls round again, making the wait all the more worthwhile.
